Above left some of the radar gang on liberty somewhere in the middle east. Civvies weren't allowed on US Navy ships at that time but an exception had to be made in certain Middle East  ports.
Left is either a camel herder or a platoon of marines marching. Bahrain in the Persian Gulf.
Some scenes from pierside in Beirut, Lebanon. Carrier America is in background. Beirut was a beautiful city with friendly people and nice warm beaches.

In the Med there was always the ever present Soviets, whether merchant fishing or naval and air they were there like shadows, gathering information and intellegence. This is a shot of a Russian Mig that flew close to the ship and Tom caught it on a little Kodak. Not very clear and doesn't look close here. Tom said he flew close enough he could see the pilot give a finger salute. I am sure some sailors gave him a salute of more than one kind too.
