After graduating from the US Naval Academy in 1931 Commander Schmidling reported
aboard the USS Arizona BB 39 where he served until May of 1938, and then went to
submarine school at New London, Connecticut. He was sent to the USS S-37 in December
1938 and two years later served on the USS Perry DD 340 until 1941, when
he was transferred to the USS Macomb DD 458 as a gunnery officer. In 1943 he
was at the operational training school at Treasure Island and in November of that
same year became the Commanding Officer of the USS Stembel DD 644. In 1946 he
was commanding officer of the USS New DD 818 and in March of that year he inactivated
the USS South Dakota BB 57. He was transferred to Sub Group One in the
Atlantic Reserve Fleet and in 1948 attended guided missle school. One year later
he was with the bureau of ordnance as technical liason officer at Bell Telephone
Laboratories prior to his transfer to the USS New Jersey in 1950. |
