USS New Ship Photo  Page 3
Another view of New in Venice on her first cruise. This was in 1946. The war time camo scheme was painted over in haze gray. She still has the smalle hull numbers used during the war years but that was to change in the next few months. Would love to hear from anyone who was a plank owner or on her during this time. This year New did participate in her first cold war experience when the communists tried to take over the government of Greece. New was one of several ships instrumental in staopping that. Well then it stopped it. They did eventually take over in the name of socialism which is the same thing and at the time of this writing that is failing as it always does.
Above is a good view of New as DDE 818 in the fifties. DDE was a designation for escorting of carriers and larger ships. Destroyers had many duties. Screening for submarines became a major task in WW 1 and increased in WW2. During the cold war years that duty was just as serious with the increased threats of the communists and the expansion of the Soviet navy.  Sacrifice to save the big boys was another one and a last resort of course.
These three are all of New in 50s. Notice the hedge hogg mounts where Mount 52 originally was prior to 1950. Thanks to Chris Hodge in Portsmouth, England  for finding these. Chris who is retired CPO of the Royal Navy is a good friend to me, to the New and to the US Navy which he always admired. He is also a good friend tt the US. Thanks Chris.
Two excellent views of New taken by the shipyard where she was built. New was finished by VJ day but wasn't commissioned for several more months due to an imediate slow down and cuts at wars end. It didn't take long tho to realize th eneed to keep the fleet up to date. Still in wartime camo. Measure 22
Thanks to Jerry Frissel RD 2 for this fine picture of New with the tiger patch
